As opposed to copying all the post individually, I've combined all the posts about the Motorcycle (well, most of them) into 1 post! Not many of the gallery links or other links work in here, so be aware!! I've also tried to copy over non/spam comments
As opposed to copying all the post individually, I've combined all the posts about the Motorcycle (well, most of them) into 1 post! Project Maxim Update 6 Its been a few days... Had a nice relaxing vacation, and that included working on the bike!!! Things Accomplished: - Finnished Rebuilding Carbs
- Got the Drive Chain Off
- Cleaned Drive Chain
- Cleaned Rear Break Parts
- Tried on helmets
- Other random things
Now for some detail. Friday, I got the last of the parts I needed to get the carbs back working... put them on (had to pull apart and fix a stupid mistake as well), and tried to start the bike.... NO LOVE Got Fuel, Got Air, Got Spark... well... kinda. Technically there is a spark. Is it a good spark? Is it well Timed? Is it a figment of my imagination? Could be all 3!! So the determination has been made to start at the cheapest ignigion parts and go from there. This bike has automatic timing, so no real adjustment can be done there so lets start with the plugs. I picked up some today, trusting the guy at the parts counter, and was dissapointed. WRONG PLUGS!! I"m taking the old plug with me tommorow. AND, I'm getting 4 plugs, just in case. If changing plugs doesn't work... its time to test the wires and coils and start replacing them. Wires and caps are almost 70 bucks for the set and the coils are almost 100 a piece, IF you can find them. Ebay has some... we will have to see. If you have any ideas about how to go about things, PLEASE let me know.. Theres even a forum for this rebuild now, so feel free to let your feelings be known, or at least leave a comment. Thanks for being interested, and send a happy thought to DC, maybe it will stop raining someday. PS - More Pics in the gallery Adam – Thu, 2006 – 07 – 06 01:39 Project Maxim Update 5 Well, I think I managed to get a bit further than I intended to go, but hey, its always worth it to learn!! What did I do over the last 2 working days? - Pulled the Front Fender / Disconnected Speedo Cable
- Pulled Rear Plastic Fender
- Disconnected Taillight assembly
- Pulled the Sub fender
- Pulled the other part of the sub fender
- pulled the mono-shock
- pulled the rear tire and axel
- Disassembled the brake drum/shoes
I should be able to get the parts cleaned of their past dirt and grime and maybe get some cleaning done on the frame itself. I can also now assess the rear brakes, the mono-shock, the axel, the chain, and the springarm-bushings. Still waiting on parts for carbs, going to be ordering a few more parts tommorow. I intend to get the carbs back on ASAP and try to get her running to make sure I'm not working on a dead horse!! Thats all for now!! Don't forget to comment on what you see. Do you like it? As Always, a new section of the project gallery can be found here Adam – Wed, 2006 – 06 – 28 00:22 Project Maxim Update 4 Good Morning everyone! I didn't get to it last night, and its not much, but: PROJECT MAXIM UPDATE 4!!!!! I'm still waiting on parts to rebuld the carbs and brakes, so theres not much I can do on that side of things, so I did some cosmetic things. (click to read more) - Pulled the headlight Housing
- "Pursuaded" the right side bracket back into place
- Pulled the Rear Plastic Fender
- "Pursuaded" the left side turn signal bracket back into place
And that was about it. I'll try to get some pics today and work on something. Maybe the back brakes, I dunno. So there ya go, short and sweet! Don't forget to comment on things!! Project Maxim Update 3 Yes, 2 blog updates in 1 day!!! WOW On to the Maxim Update: Completed in the last 2 days: NOTHING Partially completed in the last 2 days: - More Carb Cleaning
- Some Parts Ordered
- Repair Manual Ordered
- Front Brake Master Cylinder Removed
- Front Brake Master Cylinder Cleaned
- Brake Cylinder pulled
- Front Brake Caliper Pulled
- Front Brake Caliper Cleaned
Head to the Gallery for this update to see pics, but heres the description: I had to get 2 new tools, a proper sized flathead screwdriver and a inner locking spring plier. I will be returning the pliers since they SUCK, and get better ones. I've managed to get all the jets unplugged and flowing once, but I intend to go through it all again. I had to order some screws and o-rings for the carbs as well, so I will probably clean them one more time when I get the parts. Now the brakes, that was a trip. I decided after dinner last night to go back out to the garage and pull the cap from the res. The Brake fluid had completely solidified (see pictures). Some cleaner and time and we got that fixed. Finally pulled the thing off the bars to do it better. Pulled the piston in the master cylinder and decided to buy the rebuild kit (next paycheck). Front pads seem to be in great shape and the fluid in the caliper was dark, but still fluid. I hope I can save the hoses since they are expensive. My hope is, at this point, that this brake work, the carb work, and a new throttle cable are the only nessicary fixes on the bike. The rest is cosmetic!! Wish me luck!!! Project Maxim Update 2 Today's Project: - Does she have spark?
- Get that CARB off of there!
- Start cleaning the carb
I'm proud to say.. all objectives accomplished. And does she have spark..... YES SHE DOES!!! Both plugs are sparking great! The Carbs don't look to bad. They were a BIATCH to get out (messed up a bracket in the air box doing it, I hope its not discontinued) The float Bowls have some gunk and varnish, but not to bad. A couple of hours cleaning with Carb Cleaner and a small toothbrush and I think we will be back in working order. Also going to need to replace a couple of screws. Wonder were to find them local. Still really should get a repair manual. Found a PDF of the bike through the 1978 model, but its not quite perfect. Of Course, more pics in the Gallery, I really should organise it better!! Thats all for now. Thanks for dropping in!! Project Maxim Update Yes, I've decided to call it project Maxim. Now for the update. Pulled the Seat, and Battery. I hooked up a jump box to the bike for power and tested the signals, headlight, taillight, horn, killswitches and the starter. All work fine and the engine turns over GREAT! No Joy on starting though, still have work to do there. So, Off comes the Gas Tank. Drained it, Pulled it, and Pulled the Carb. There is a little bit of rust inside, so I'm going to get that knocked loose, reassemble and get gas back in it to prevent any more rust. I also picked up a small, clear, inline fuel filter to add to the system so I can monitor the gas comming out of the tank. Next Step: Pull those CARBS! I'm hoping thats the problem and is an easy fix. List of things to get: - More Carb Cleaner
- Better inline filter
- "Milk Stone" Remover (sugestion from dad for the tank)
- OEM or Haynes Repair/Shop manual.
Thats it for now, oh, I also did an oil change, and was supprised at how much oil the thing holds! Check out the Gallery for pics!! A Much Less Sad Day! Check it out!!! My NEW Motorcycle. Well, its not exactly new. But it is NEW TO ME! IT is a 1982 Yamaha Maxim XS400 Street Bike. Its black and its KOOL. Its my newest Project. Why a project? Because it doesn't run! Its a "Needs Work" bike, but thats why I got it for $150 bucks!! I promise I will take better pics this weekend (maybe tommorow) so you can see it in the daylight. I will also make sure to take pics as I fix and document problems on the bike and get it back to good working order so I can drive it to work. Goal: Be Able to Ride it to Work this Year Do you think I can make it? Comment away!!
